Frequently asked questions
What can I expect from our first session?
When we have our first meeting, we will have an initial discussion during which I will ask you questions about your life and offer a safe space for you to share your concerns, pain, loss, struggles, etc. I will be able to offer you some first impressions of your core issues and evaluate your needs. This part of the initial process is to determine the “goodness of fit.” The most important part of the therapeutic relationship is the fit between the client and the therapist. There are countless schools of therapy but because therapy is a relationship, it must be built on trust and chemistry. It is from there that we can best work towards change.
How often will I see you?
Most people schedule weekly sessions at the minimum, and sometimes twice weekly. This will depend on your issues, needs, and your schedule. Sessions are 50 minutes long.
Do you offer remote sessions by phone or online?
Yes, I offer both. If you are traveling for work or pleasure I am happy to accommodate either through phone sessions or FaceTime. It is important to maintain consistency, whether it is a short term therapy or a more open-ended one.
Do you have a cancellation policy?
Yes. There is no charge for appointments canceled one week in advance. You are responsible to pay for appointments canceled less than a week in advance, or missed. If I am able to find you another time slot during the same week as the missed or canceled appointment, I will do so. This is at my discretion.
Do you accept insurance?
I do not participate with any insurance companies. If you have a PPO or similar plan that allows for an out-of-network provider, you may able to get partial or total reimbursement. Policies vary, so it is important to check with your carrier regarding your mental health benefit, annual deductible, number of sessions allowed per calendar year, and whether sessions require pre-authorization. Regardless of your coverage, my bookkeeper will provide you with an invoice at the end of each month which you can submit to your insurance.
What forms of payment do you accept, and what is your fee?
Please call me or email me to discuss my fee. I accept cash and checks. Payment is due at the end of each session unless we have made other arrangements.
Can you prescribe drugs?
No I can’t, but should we determine that you might need a consultation for medication, I collaborate with several psychiatrists and psychopharmacologists.
What if I need to speak to you in between sessions?
One of the benefits of working with me is that you will have access to me in between sessions via text, email, and phone should you need it. While I may not be available at that moment, I will get back to you at my very earliest convenience. We may have a text exchange, an email exchange, or a phone call lasting 20 minutes or less. Anything longer would indicate that you might require an additional session for that week. There is no additional charge for these services, the purpose of which is to encourage you to ask for help. This helps to foster more trust as we walk along this path together.
